USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service and industry work together to generate market reports

.

Washington, DC
March 22, 2007

The Fruit and Vegetable Market News Service of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has partnered with a leading industry association to assist it in generating composite reports for association members and other interested parties.

The California Strawberry Commission has teamed with AMS to provide the National Berry Report to market participants. The AMS Market News staff tracks the volume of movement and market prices for strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and other berries on a daily basis, making the information available on its Market News Portal and the Market News Web site.

Strawberry commission officials will collect the market information from the portal and generate the National Berry Report, and post it on their Web site -- www.calstrawberry.com/members/nationalberryrport.asp -- free of charge to interested parties. AMS had previously limited its composite market reports to shift its resources to report additional markets.

AMS is also working with the National Watermelon Board to create a similar composite report for watermelons for the next season. In addition, the agency has met with the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas concerning its interest in ensuring the availability of the composite Tomato Fax Report.
