Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, announced today the
completion of a 10,000 square foot, $1.3 million expansion of
its seed quality facility in Tipton, Ind. With the additional
space, the facility will be able to handle up to 125,000
germination, vigor and purity quality tests for corn, soybean,
wheat and sorghum seed per year.
"Staying ahead of the growing demand for superior yielding
Pioneer® brand seed is a challenge, but it is a great challenge
to have," says Tom Bockhaus, Pioneer director of supply planning
and logistics. "With the completion of this expansion, we will
be able to move samples quickly among labs to help balance our
testing needs more efficiently around the world."
Pioneer tests its seed for germination, vigor, genetic purity,
trait purity, size and plantability to ensure its customers have
high-quality seed. Strict testing method standards are used
throughout the production process and in the testing facilities
to evaluate all the types of seed it sells.
"Our customers expect every bag of Pioneer seed to be top
quality so they can get the most out of their seed investment,"
says Bockhaus. "As we continue to develop and introduce many
exciting new seed products and technologies, we remain firmly
rooted in our commitment to seed quality."
The existing seed quality facility has been in operation since
1982. Another large expansion project was completed in 1988.
In addition to building new facilities to meet demand, Pioneer
has expanded and upgraded existing production and testing
locations throughout the world. Other central seed testing
facilities, which are all ISO 9001:2000 certified, are located
in Johnston, Iowa; Urbandale, Iowa; Chatham, Ontario, Canada;
Aussonne, France; and Parndorf, Austria. ISO 9000 is a family of
standards for quality management systems; Pioneer is registered
to ISO 9001:2000, which affirms that a company meets a series of
quality requirements as confirmed by an independent, third-party
auditor.
