USDA seeks comments on the proposed voluntary standards for grades of tomatoes on the vine

.

Washington, DC
February 27, 2007

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service is soliciting comments on the proposed voluntary U.S. Standards for Grades of Tomatoes on the Vine (TOV.)

AMS has received comments from a previous notice published in the Federal Register that the TOV industry is interested in the creation of a new standard, which will provide a common language for trade facilitation.

The Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946, as amended, directs and authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture “to develop and improve standards of quality, condition, quantity, grade and packaging and recommend and demonstrate such standards in order to encourage uniformity and consistency in commercial practices.”

AMS works with industry representatives and others to establish or revise U.S. standards for nearly 240 agricultural products. Industry uses standards in the marketplace to specify acceptable quality and/or condition of commodities.

The request for comments was published in the Feb. 16, 2007, Federal Register. Comments must be received by April 17, 2007, and should be mailed to Vincent J. Fusaro, Standardization Section Acting Head, AMS Fruit & Vegetable Programs, Room 1661–South, USDA Stop 0240, 1400 Independence Avenue SW, Washington D.C. 20250. In addition, copies of the notice are available from the same address. Comments may be e-mailed to FPBDocketClerk@usda.gov.
