Punjab Seed Council approves three new cotton seed varieties

Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Muhammad Arshad Khan Lodhi has said that Punjab Seed Council (PSC) has approved three new cotton seed varieties which would bring revolution in Agro economy with their better yield potential.

Chairing a meeting of Punjab Seed Council held here on Thursday, he said that newly approved variety CIM-534 has been evolved by Cotton Research Institute, Multan, which has great resistance against virus, pest attack and temperature.

He further said that second variety MNH-786 has also been evolved by Cotton Research Institute, Multan, which bears qualities of early maturing, resistant against pest and diseases and comparatively high yielding variety.

Lodhi said that 3rd cotton variety NIBJI-2 approved by Punjab Seed Council has been evolved by National Institute for Bio Technology & Genetic Engineering, Faisalabad, which also has highly resistance against leaf curl virus, drought and pest attacks.

The Minister said that the seed of newly approved varieties would be available on large scale by PSC after two years’ multiplication process. Revision in standards, improvement for quality cotton production was also discussed at length in the meeting.

The meeting was attended by ADC MINFAL, MD, PSC, Central Cotton Committee President, DG,FSC & R.D., D.G. Research and representative from TCP, ginners association, farmers organisation and experts of federal and provincial agriculture research wings.
