Pioneer Hi-Bred International and American Dairy Science Association announce forage award recipient

Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. and the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) are proud to announce Karen A. Beauchemin, Ph.D., senior scientist, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge Research Center, as the 2005 recipient of the Pioneer Forage Award. Along with the honor, Beauchemin also will receive a monetary award.

The Pioneer Forage Award recognizes outstanding research and/or educational contributions in forage production, processing, storage or utilization.

"Pioneer is proud to recognize Dr. Beauchemin's remarkable achievements in the forage arena," says Bill Mahanna, Ph.D., Pioneer Global Nutritional Sciences coordinator. "Her forage-related work allows for continual improvement among the dairy, beef and feed industries, and her contributions are deeply valued."

Beauchemin is internationally recognized for her expertise in rumen function, forage optimization and on-farm nutrient management. A noted communicator, her research also focuses on improving fiber digestion using novel approaches such as fibrolytic enzymes.

The Pioneer Forage Award has been given annually since 1991. Past recipients include:

  • 1999 Limin Kung – University of Delaware
  • 2000 Lane Ely – University of Georgia
  • 2001 Wayne Coblentz – University of Arkansas
  • 2002 No award winner selected by ADSA
  • 2003 Jim Russell – Iowa State University
  • 2004 Dave Mertens – USDA/ARS Dairy Forage Research Center
