Touchdown Total herbicide, now with patented Low Foam
Technology, reduces foaming during mixing and tankfill.
Developed by formulation chemists at
Syngenta, Low Foam
Technology works by stabilizing anti-foaming agents throughout
the glyphosate herbicide. During tankfill, retailers can expect
less foam, which can slow down the spraying operation.
”Syngenta strives to deliver new technologies and product
innovations to the crop protection market. The launch of the Low
Foam Technology is an example of this continued commitment,”
explained Corey Huck, Touchdown® brand manager for Syngenta.
Best Weed Management Practices
The following 'best practices' for weed management in
Roundup Ready® (RR™) crops were developed by Syngenta
with input from 15 independent weed and resistance
management experts. These guidelines are listed right on
the Touchdown Total label and can help protect farms
from glyphosate-resistant weeds.
Diversify glyphosate-dependent weed control programs
with alternative herbicides or cultural practices.
- In RR corn and RR
soybean systems, do not use more than two
applications of a glyphosate-based herbicide over a
two-year period.
- Use alternative
burndown and/or residual herbicides for RR crops
likely to require more than one application of
glyphosate.
- To manage
glyphosate-resistant volunteers, rotate RR crops
with conventional crops.
- Use full label
rates of glyphosate and tankmix partners. Minimize
weed escapes.
- 5. Monitor treated
weed populations for any loss of field efficacy.
- Contact your local
extension specialist, certified crop advisor, and/or
manufacturer for herbicide resistance management
and/or integrated weed management recommendations
for specific crops and resistant weed biotypes.

”Huck continued, ”Retailers
often are delayed while filling a mini-bulk tank because the
tank fills with foam at about half full. Growers either stop in
between sprays to allow the foam to settle or add their own
anti-foam. By using Touchdown Total with Low Foam Technology,
retailers can now cut their filling time and farmers can spray
continuously without having to deal with product foaming.”
Chuck Foresman, technical brand
manager for Touchdown, explained how the technology works. “Low
Foam Technology works by successfully preventing the separation
of the anti-foam from the herbicide liquid. In a typical
Touchdown formulation, glyphosate is prepared as a water-based
solution while the anti-foam is made of silicone oil, which is
insoluble in water and less dense than the glyphosate
formulation. When the water-based Touchdown and oil are mixed
together, the anti-foam droplets quickly rise to the top,
separating and making anti-foam absent in the lower portions of
bulk tanks. With the innovative Low Foam Technology, the
anti-foam stays incorporated with the herbicide and rises very
slowly through the herbicide, delaying separation for several
months. The result is an improved Touchdown Total formulation
with low foaming as well as easier mixing and handling.”
