USDA grants protection to 18 new plant varieties

September 2, 2003

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 18 new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include lettuce and soybean.

The 18 certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The 18 certificates are:

  • the Red Rage variety of lettuce, developed by Pybas Vegetable Seed Co., Inc. and Douglas Peters, Santa Maria, California;

  • the S25-D3 variety of soybean, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota; and

  • the 91M10, 91M50, 91M90, 92M10, 92M30, 92M31, 92M50, 92M70, 92M72, 93M40, 93M60, 93M90, 93M91, 94M40, 94M41 and 94M70 varieties of soybean, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, Iowa.
