USDA grants protection to 28 new cotton, pea, soybean and wheat varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 28 new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include cotton, pea, soybean and wheat.

The 28 certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The 28 certificates are:

  • the DP 90B, DP 50B, DP 90RR, DP 5111, DP 688 B/RR, DP 410 B, DP 436 RR, DP 458 B/RR and DP 425 RR varieties of cotton, developed by D&PL Technology Holding Corporation, Scott, Miss.;

  • the Topps* variety of pea, developed by Pure Line Seed Inc. & Upper Valley Seed Company, Moscow, Idaho;  

  • the Para variety of pea, developed by Pure Line Seed Inc., Moscow, Idaho

  • the Sugar Loaf and Stanton varieties of pea, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Boise, Idaho;

  • the SN79553, SY32157, SN79624, SN79582 and SN79596 varieties of soybean, developed by Asgrow Seed Company LLC, Ames, Iowa;

  • the 91M40, 92M00, 92M71, 92M80, 93M41 and 93M80 varieties of soybean, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, Iowa;

  • the Moreland* variety of common wheat, developed by University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho;

  • the AP401 CL* variety of common wheat, developed by Agripro Wheat, a business unit of Advanta U.S.A. Inc., Junction City, Kan.;

  • the Pearl* variety of common wheat, developed by Virginia Tech Intellectural Properties, Inc., Blacksburg, Va.; and

  • the Coker 9295* variety of common wheat, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Washington, Iowa.

* In the United States seed of this variety (1) shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed and (2) shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT.1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).
