Pioneer commits to biodiesel in support of agriculture and environment

Des Moines, Iowa
February 27, 2003

Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. announced today a commitment to use biodiesel in its farm and tractor equipment and over-the-road diesel vehicles as of April 2003, where available.

Tom West, Pioneer vice president, made the announcement today at a press conference at the annual Commodity Classic held in Charlotte, N.C., through tomorrow. Ron Heck, first vice president of the American Soybean Association, member of the national Biodiesel Board and an Iowa grower joined West and praised Pioneer for its support of the environment and oilseed producers.

"Pioneer's use of biodiesel creates more demand for biodiesel, which in turn creates higher demand for soybeans, canola and other oilseeds," said Heck. "We hope Pioneer's leadership encourages other agribusiness companies to follow suit."

This policy will affect Pioneer's U.S. and Canadian research and supply management operations and includes more than 300 diesel vehicles and pieces of farm equipment.

"Our commitment to biodiesel is another way Pioneer is supporting agriculture by increasing demand for the crops our customers grow," said West. "The decision is also in line with the environmental goals of DuPont to become a more sustainable company by increasing our use of renewable resources, therefore reducing our environmental footprint. This move is a step toward that end -- a reflection of our commitment to the environment and renewable energy."

As part of its sustainability mission, DuPont has set four environmental goals for 2010, supplementing existing goals:

  • To derive 25 percent of revenues from non-depletable resources -- up from 14 percent in 2002.
  • To reduce global carbon-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent, using 1990 as a base year. The company has already surpassed this goal with a 68 percent reduction.
  • To hold energy use flat using 1990 as a base year.
  • To source 10 percent of the company's global energy use in the year 2010 from renewable resources.

Biodiesel is a cleaner burning alternative fuel produced from renewable vegetable oils from crops like soybeans, canola and sunflower. It can be used as a pure fuel (B100) or can be blended at varying percentages with petroleum diesel (petrodiesel). These blends of 2, 5 and 20 percent are most commonly referred to as B2, B5 and B20 and can be used on diesel engines without modifications.

Utilizing biodiesel has significant environmental, energy security and economic benefits. Independent tests show that the use of biodiesel results in the significant reduction in unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions compared to petrodiesel. And biodiesel contains no sulfur or aromatics and reduces lifecycle carbon dioxide by 78 percent. Increasing the use of renewable fuel reduces dependence on foreign oil and contributes to the farm economy. About 300 major fleets currently use biodiesel nationwide.

For Pioneer, the conversion from petroleum diesel to biodiesel is relatively cost neutral. Although B2 and B5 biodiesel costs approximately 2 cents and 5 cents more per gallon respectively than petroleum diesel, when weighing the benefits to the environment, agriculture and the economy, biodiesel is a much better investment. The cost of B2 and B5 biodiesel is comparative to premium diesel.
