USDA grants protection to 30 new plant varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 30 new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include alfalfa, barley, chickling vetch, cotton, fescue, pea, potato, soybean, squash and wheat.

The 30 certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The 30 certificates are:

•the Geneva, Reno and EverGreen varieties of alfalfa developed by Forage Genetics, Inc., West Salem, Wis.;

•the Jersey* variety of barley developed by Cebeco Seeds B.V., Vlijmen, The Netherlands;

•the Drummond* variety of barley developed by NDSU Research Foundation, Fargo, N.D.;

•the AC Greenfix* variety of chickling vetch developed by Agricultural and Agri-Food Canada Semi-arid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre, Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada;

•the ST 495 variety of cotton developed by Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Company, Inc., Memphis, Tenn;

•the Holland 186 variety of cotton developed by Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Company, Inc., Idalou, Texas;

•the Barlexas variety of tall fescue developed by Barenbrug USA, Oosterhout, The Netherlands;

•the Mr. Big and Lil' Mo varieties of pea developed by Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Inc., Woodland, Calif.;

•the Perfection 57 variety of pea developed by Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Inc., Oxnard, Calif.;

•the FP2070 variety of pea developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Boise, Idaho;

•the Big Daddy* variety of field pea developed by Cebeco Seeds B.V., Vlijmen, The Netherlands;

•the NL30-RBK variety of potato developed by Monsanto Company, St . Louis, Mo.;

•the Saxon variety of potato developed by Cygnet Potato Breeders Ltd., Thomanean, Milnathort, UK;

•the Delikat variety of potato developed by NORIKA Nordring-Kartoffelzucht - und Vermehrungs-GmbH Groß Lüsewitz, Lüsewitz, Germany;

•the Russet Norkotah 278, Russet Norkotah 112 and Russet Norkotah 223 varieties of potato developed by Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, College Station, Texas;

•the 92B12 variety of soybean developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, Iowa;

•the 9594 variety of soybean developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Des Moines, Iowa;

•the S14-U4 variety of soybean developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn.;

•the Bush Delicata variety of squash developed by Cornell University Experiment Station, Ithaca, N.Y.;

•the Bravo* variety of common wheat developed by Sunbeam Extract Co., Wooster, Ohio;

•the Granite* variety of common wheat developed by Dr. Peter Franck, Schwaebisch Hall, Germany;

•the NuFrontier* variety of common wheat developed by Agripro Wheat, a business unit of Advanta USA, Junction City, Kan.;

•the Knudson* variety of common wheat developed by Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Mo.;

•the 2174 variety of common wheat developed by Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, Stillwater, Okla.; and

•the TAM 302* variety of common wheat developed by Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, College Station, Texas.


* In the United States seed of this variety (1) shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed and (2) shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).
