Seedtech have today announced the three winners of their recent competition for 5 hectares of Belfry Hybrid Barley; Luke Cunningham farming in Co. Waterford, Michael O’Neil from Co. Tipperary and Pat Keenan who is farming in Co. Kildare. As the newest Hybrid Barley to come to market, based on the recently released 2019 DAFM Recommended List results, all three growers will be sowing the winter barley variety with the best combination of yield, straw and grain quality, and disease resistance.

Luke Cunningham runs a mixed tillage, sheep and cattle farm alongside his father Matt in Ardmore, West Waterford. Having grown Quadra Hybrid Barley for the last 2 years, Luke now plans on sowing 40% of his winter barley crop in Hybrid Barley this year. Speaking on receiving his prize Luke said “It was a pleasant surprise to win this prize; I planned on growing Bazooka and Belfry Hybrid Barley this year anyway so this is an added bonus.”

Michael O’Neill is a busy contractor based in Cahir South Tipperary, along with managing a tillage and beef farm. Michael grew Hybrid Barley for the first-time last year and was very pleased with the performance of Bazooka at 4.1 tonnes/acre in his 2018 harvest. Michael believes he gets better yields with Hybrid Barley and as such stated he was “very happy to receive this prize from Seedtech”.

The final prize went to Pat Keenan, who runs a mixed tillage and suckler farm in Rathangan Co. Kildare. Pat has never grown Hybrid Barley before, so is very keen to try the crop. Discussing this Pat said “I’ve been listening to how other farmers are getting on with Hybrids and hearing good things; so I’ve been planning on trying them out. This prize gives me the perfect opportunity to do that.”

Belfry Hybrid Barley, along with the varieties Quadra and Bazooka, are available for sale from merchants through-out the country. Seedtech can be contacted on 051 832814 or info@seedtech.ie for more information.
