World trade in planting seeds is dominated by the U.S. and the EU. Last marketing year, only 14% of international seed trade occurred where neither the importer nor the exporter were in the U.S. or EU, amounting to only $500 million out of the estimated world seed trade total $3.9 billion. Intra-EU trade accounted for about one-third of total world seed trade value. The importance of intra-EU seed trade was greatest in beets (67% of world beet seed trade was intra-EU), grain (49%) and corn (37%). U.S. seed trade with NAFTA partners, by comparison, was roughly equal to 11% of world trade. U.S. grain seed exports to Canada and Mexico accounted for 25% of world trade in grain seed. Trade between the U.S. and EU accounted for about 7% of world trade. It is also interesting to note that the EU’s external trade with partners other than the U.S. was more important than U.S. trade with countries other than the EU and NAFTA (22% of world trade vs. 14%).
