Bloomington, Illinois
October 13, 1998Golden Harvest is introducing a
new numbering system for its corn hybrids and soybean varieties in order to keep up with
its expanding hybrid and variety portfolio.
"Our line-up of seed products continues to grow, and the addition of technology
products to the Golden Harvest portfolio has put further stress on our existing numbering
system," says Jim Shearl, executive vice president of Golden Harvest Seeds, Inc.
"This new system will make it easier for our customers to select seed products based
on maturity, technologies and value-added traits."
Corn hybrids and soybean varieties in the new Golden Harvest numbering system will still
consist of a four digit number preceded by an "H". This nomenclature maintains
the unique Golden Harvest identity for seed products found in the current system, while
allowing for an expanded array of corn hybrid and soybean variety numbers.
Corn hybrids under the new system will receive a number between 6000 and 9999. Higher
numbers will continue to indicate later maturity, as they do for current Golden Harvest
hybrids. The first number designates the Relative Maturity (RM) group. The next three
numbers designate the specific hybrid in that RM group. For example, H-7428 and H-7649
would both be in the RM seven group, 96 to 103 day RM, with H-7649 having a later maturity
than H-7428.

H-6000 to H-6999 |

104 - 111 days |
H-8000 to H-8999 |
112 days and up |
H-9000 to H-9999 |
Corn hybrids containing technology traits will have
letters to signify these traits immediately after the numbers, such as IMI (IMI-CORN(R),
LL (Liberty Link(R) Hybrids), Bt (YieldGard(R) Insect Protected Corn), RR (Roundup
Ready(R) Corn), and HOC (High Oil Corn). The same procedure will be used for soybean
varieties with special traits, such as RR (Roundup Ready(R) Soybeans) and STS (STS(R)
Soybeans). For example, H-7233Bt would be a Golden Harvest YieldGard Insect Protected
hybrid.
Soybean varieties will also be identified by an "H" followed by a four digit
number beginning with zero through five, depending on maturity group. The second number
will designate the submaturity group. For example, H-3150 would be a maturity group 3.

The new numbering system will be used for seed products
assigned numbers after June 1, 1998. H numbers in use prior to this date will not be
changed. Growers wishing to learn more about the new Golden Harvest nomenclature system

The Golden Harvest brand of hybrid corn, soybeans, sorghum and alfalfa is produced and
marketed by five family-owned and managed seed companies serving farmers throughout the
U.S.
Corn Belt, Europe and South America. These five companies share research and marketing
resources nationally, while continuing to offer the nearby service that is the heart of
the seed
industry.
