August 3, 1999At a ceremony to
officially preview the opening of the Left &
Center Field of Dreams 10th Anniversary Corn Maze, Garst
Seed Company officials announced that a portion of the proceeds
from maze admission fees will be donated to Farm Safety 4
Just Kids.
The announcement was made during a media and VIP preview held at the
6.4 acre maze located behind Left & Center Field of Dreams near Dyersville, Iowa.
"Garst Seed Company along with Left & Center Field of Dreams, is proud to
announce that a portion of all Field of Dreams corn maze proceeds will be donated to Farm
Safety 4 Just Kids," says Jeff Lacina, public relations manager for Garst Seed
Company. "Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is a very worthwhile and well respected
organization and we wanted to give something back to an organization that is all about the
education and promotion of
on-farm safety for North America's farm families."
Founded in 1987, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids now has 93 chapters
in 27 U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces. The organization's mission is to promote a
safe farm environment, to prevent health hazards, injuries and fatalities to children and
youth.
"We are very pleased that Garst and Left & Center
Field of Dreams people thought about children and farm safety as a beneficiary of all
their hard work in making this corn maze a reality," says Marilyn Adams, president
and founder of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. "Today, finding things to do as a family has
become very difficult, but a corn maze is a great family activity in which all family
members can play an equal role in and have a lot of fun doing it."
However, Adams does remind kids and adults alike farmers'
corn fields are not play fields. "Cornfields should never be allowed as play areas
for hide and seek or other adventures," notes Adams. "If you're going to explore
a corn field, it should be done in a controlled situation, such as a corn maze. Enjoy it
safely."
More information about Farm Safety 4 Just Kids as well as a
listing of chapters can be found at their web site at www.fs4jk.org
or by calling them at 800/423-5437.
In addition to a portion of every admission ticket, Keith
Rahe, manager of Left & Center Field of Dreams announced that the corn harvested from
the maze will be sold on the cash market and total selling price donated to the group as
well. "Being located in the heart of Iowa's family farms and a farm kid myself, we
wanted to make sure that visitors from all over can enjoy the maze and know that their
support will be going to a very good cause - safety programs and education for farm
families around North America," adds Rahe.
The Left & Center Field of Dreams corn maze is open from
9 AM to 5 PM seven days a week through Labor Day. After Labor Day and until October 31,
the maze will be open Thursday through Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Maze admission fees are $6
for adults and $4 for children ages 6 to 11. Children under 5 are free. Group prices are
available with reservations.
The Field of Dreams corn maze is located just 3.3 miles
northeast of Dyersville, Iowa.
Before entering the Corn Maze, guests will be given a blank
answer sheet. Signs posted throughout the maze challenge visitors' baseball and Field of
Dreams movie knowledge with correct answers "pointing" to the proper path out of
the maze. Also positioned inside the maze are five "rest stations", complete
with a bench, water and information and questions and answers about the importance of
modern corn production to Iowa's and America's corn growers.
