Garst introduces three new grain sorghum varieties for the high plains
Slater, Iowa
February 23, 1999

For the 1999 crop season, Garst Seed Company is introducing three new grain sorghum hybrids specifically developed for High Plains growers.

The three new Garst sorghum hybrids are Garst 5664, 5515, and 5440. These new hybrids offer grain sorghum producers excellent new options in the medium-early, medium, and medium-full maturity range. All three combine the drought stress, strong stalks, and high yield punch needed by today's top grain sorghum producers. When planted with established hybrids like Garst
5631Y or 5616, these hybrids offer an outstanding package of yield and agronomics.

New Grain Sorghum Hybrids

Garst 5664 is a new medium early bronze grain sorghum that is adapted to most sorghum areas. 5664 has uniform plant height with good head exertion and excellent dryland yields. It has strong stalks for top half stability. This superior standability of Garst 5664 is especially evident in
areas that have droughty conditions during and after the grain fill period.

Garst 5515 is a new medium maturity pale red hybrid that is destined to become a high plains favorite. Developed by our Australian breeding program, 5515 produces plants of medium height, good uniformity, and superior stalks. Garst 5515 has shown the ability to maintain agronomics and yield very well under drought stress while producing exceptional yields under more ideal
conditions.

Rounding out the new grain sorghum additions for 1999 is Garst 5440, a new, broadly adapted hybrid with high top-end yield potential and excellent stalk quality, especially for hybrids in this maturity range. Garst 5440 is a medium-full hybrid that produces a uniform field of red grain. It has biotype E greenbug resistance and excellent grain threshability.

Proven Performers

Garst 5616 is a medium-early bronze hybrid has exceptional yield punch, even under stress environments. Wide geographic adaptability, outstanding uniformity, and excellent stalk quality have made 5616 a favorite in Kansas and the panhandle of Texas. In the 1998 Kansas State University Sorghum Performance Tests, Garst 5616 consistently produced above average yields
while having among the lowest lodging scores rated.

Garst 5631Y is a medium-early cream hybrid that emerges quickly for successful early plantings. It is an attractive, short stature hybrid with good uniformity and Biotype E greenbug resistance. Garst 5613Y yields have been strong and consistent in university and company trials.

Garst 5429 is a medium-full maturity bronze with excellent stress tolerance and agronomics. Fast emergence for early plantings, good head exertion and uniformity, and strong stalks should make this hybrid a top performer. Garst 5429 produced the highest yield as a percent of test average across all the south central university trials in Kansas in 1998.
