Langhorne, Pennsylvania
January 28,1999Ecogen Inc., a leading developer of environmentally
friendly, microbial biopesticides, announced today that it has entered into an agreement
with Plant Health Care, Inc., to distribute four bioinsecticide and biofungicide products
for control of caterpillars, grubs, powdery mildew and other pests in non-agricultural
markets. The agreement extends for one to three years depending on the product and market.
The products are AQ10® biofungicide, CRYMAX® WDG Bt bioinsecticide, Lepinox(TM) WDG Bt
bioinsecticide and Cruiser®, an insecticidal nematode product, all packaged in granular
or powder form for application as water- based sprays. The markets are landscape and
arboriculture; greenhouse, nursery and floriculture; home lawn and garden; and
professional and commercial turfgrass. These markets, in the aggregate, are estimated to
exceed $250 million annually in the U.S.
"We're delighted to have Plant Health Care as a marketing partner in the U.S. to give
us a presence in these major non-agriculture markets,'' James P. Reilly, Jr., Ecogen's
Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer, said. ``We expect that the efficacy and ease of delivery of our
products
will enable us to make inroads in these markets.''
According to Wayne Wall, Plant Health Care's President, ``Virtually every expert agrees
that
the Green Industry is actively moving toward a natural systems approach to plant care and
landscape management. Biocontrol products are a critical element in the transition from
chemical-based technologies to biological-based technologies that are safer and more
compatible with the non- agricultural markets throughout the nation.''
AQ10 biofungicide controls powdery mildew in nursery and greenhouse production of
ornamentals, landscape ornamentals, greenhouse vegetables, and home gardens. CRYMAX WDG
and Lepinox WDG bioinsecticides control caterpillars in the arboriculture, ornamentals,
nursery, greenhouse, turf and home garden markets. Specific insects targeted by CRYMAX
include cabbage looper, European corn borer, beet armyworm, bagworm, tent caterpillars,
cankerworms, gypsy moth, and tussock moth. Lepinox WDG provides control of fall armyworm
and sod webworm larvae in managed turf, golf courses and homeowner lawns.
CRYMAX and Lepinox are Bt bioinsecticides currently marketed in the United States by
Ecogen, and both Ecogen and FMC Corporation [NYSE:FMC - news], respectively, to combat a
broad spectrum of caterpillar pests in row crops and fruit and vegetables, including
budworm, bollworm, loopers, armyworms, leafrollers and diamondback moth. The products were
developed using recombinant DNA and protein engineering technology to create novel
insecticidal proteins that have increased activity against several species of
caterpillars, while maintaining the favorable environmental and safety aspects of a
naturally occurring Bt.
