The Gansu Space-Breeding Engineering Center conducted first generation select breeding of 87 vegetables which were "space induced" in the Shenzhou-7 satellite.

Positive effects were observed in some mutations, according to the scientists of the center.

Select breeding and hybrid breeding will be conducted over 2 years, involving 4 generations. "Space vegetables" are expected to enter the market in 2012.

Currently the vegetable seeds are grown in greenhouses in the Gansu Space-Breeding Engineering Center, which is located in Tianshui, Gansu province.
