Speaking today at the World Grain
Forum 2009 in St. Petersburg, John Atkin,
Syngenta Chief Operating
Officer Crop Protection, emphasized the essential role of
technology in meeting the global food production challenges of
the 21st Century. “We only have one planet, we need worldwide
collaboration to raise yields through the use of modern
technology, supportive government policies and efficient global
trade,” said Atkin.
The event, which is the result of a G8 summit initiative,
focused on grain supply and food provision for the global
population. “As the 2008 World Development Report states, more
dynamic and inclusive agriculture could help to meet the
Millennium Development Goal on poverty and hunger. Clearly, this
is a challenging goal,” continued Atkin. “The world must work
together to accelerate technology adoption. We could already
realize significant yield potential within the next three years
by comprehensively deploying existing technologies.”
Atkin went on to highlight the importance of science-based
regulatory frameworks and efficient trade systems. “Governments
and stakeholders need to recognize the importance of technology
and facilitate farmer access to it. Public investment in
agriculture, which has been reduced in recent years, should be
increased to advance technology discovery and development and
efficient global trade systems should also be encouraged.
However, without the political and institutional will to do the
right thing, we will not get very far.”
The event was hosted by Dmitry Medvedev, President of the
Russian Federation. John Atkin joined alongside guests including
Jacques Diouf, Director-General, Food and Agricultural
Organization (FAO) and various agricultural ministers.

COO de Syngenta: «Une collaboration mondiale est indispensable
pour accroître les rendements»
Invité aujourd’hui à prendre la
parole au World Grain Forum 2009 à Saint-Pétersbourg, John
Atkin, Chief Operating Officer de la division Crop Protection de
Syngenta, a souligné le rôle essentiel que les technologies sont
appelées à jouer pour répondre aux défis alimentaires mondiaux
au 21e siècle. «Nous n’avons qu’une seule planète, nous avons
besoin d’une collaboration mondiale pour accroître les
rendements, à travers l’emploi de technologies modernes, la mise
en oeuvre de politiques gouvernementales volontaristes et un
commerce mondial performant», a déclaré Atkin.
Cet événement, fruit d’une initiative du Sommet du G8, a mis
l’accent sur l’approvisionnement alimentaire – en céréales
notamment – de la population mondiale. «Comme l’indique le
Rapport sur le développement dans le monde 2008, une agriculture
plus dynamique et plus intégrée pourrait contribuer à atteindre
les Objectifs de développement du Millénaire concernant la lutte
contre la pauvreté et la faim. C’est clairement un objectif
ambitieux», a poursuivi Atkin. «Le monde doit collaborer pour
accélérer l’adoption des technologies. Nous pourrions déjà
réaliser d’importants progrès en termes de rendement au cours
des trois prochaines années en déployant sur une large échelle
les technologies existantes.»
Atkin a poursuivi en mettant en évidence l’importance de cadres
réglementaires basés sur des données scientifiques et de
systèmes commerciaux performants. «Les gouvernements et les
parties prenantes doivent reconnaître l’importance des
technologies et en faciliter l’accès pour les agriculteurs. Les
investissements publics dans l’agriculture, qui ont été réduits
ces dernières années, devraient être augmentés pour faire
avancer le développement technologique et encourager la mise en
place de systèmes commerciaux mondiaux performants. Néanmoins,
nous n’irons pas très loin sans l’appui des politiques et des
institutionnels.»
Cet évènement était organisé par Dimitri Medvedev, Président de
la Fédération de Russie. John Atkin y était présent aux cotés de
Jacques Diouf, Directeur Général de l’Organisation des Nations
Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO), et de
plusieurs ministres de l’agriculture.

Zusammenarbeit“
In seiner Rede auf dem
Weltgetreideforum 2009 in St. Petersburg hat John Atkin, Chief
Operating Officer (COO) Crop Protection von Syngenta, die
bedeutende Rolle von Technologien betont, um die globalen
Herausforderungen der Nahrungsproduktion im 21. Jahrhundert zu
bewältigen. „Wir haben nur diesen einen Planeten. Daher muss
weltweit zusammengearbeitet werden, um die Ernteerträge durch
moderne Technologien und geeignete politische Rahmenbedingungen
zu steigern und einen effizienten Welthandel zu ermöglichen“,
sagte Atkin.
Das Weltgetreideforum in St. Petersburg geht auf eine Initiative
des G8-Gipfels zurück. Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung stehen
die Getreideversorgung und Ernährungssituation der
Weltbevölkerung. „Wie der Weltentwicklungsbericht 2008 aufzeigt,
kann eine dynamischere und integriertere Landwirtschaft dazu
beitragen, die sogenannten Millennium-Ziele zur weltweiten
Bekämpfung von Armut und Hunger zu erreichen – das ist ein
ambitioniertes Ziel“, so Atkin weiter. „Wir müssen weltweit
zusammenarbeiten, um den Einsatz von Technologien in der
Landwirtschaft zu fördern. Wenn die bereits vorhandenen
Technologien konsequent eingesetzt werden, könnten schon in den
nächsten drei Jahren deutliche Ertragssteigerungen realisiert
werden.“
Atkin betonte auch die Bedeutung wissenschaftlich basierter
Zulassungsverfahren und effizienter Systeme für einen
funktionierenden Welthandel. „Regierungen und Interessengruppen
auf der ganzen Welt müssen erkennen wie wichtig Technologien
sind und den Landwirten Zugang zu diesen ermöglichen. Die
öffentlichen Investitionen in die Landwirtschaft, die in den
letzten Jahren zurückgegangen sind, müssen wieder erhöht werden,
so dass neue Technologien schneller entwickelt werden können.
Ausserdem müssen effiziente globale Handelssysteme gefördert
werden. Auch Politik und Behörden müssen dazu beitragen, sonst
kommen wir nicht sehr weit.“
Das Forum fand auf Einladung von Dmitry Medvedev, Präsident der
Russischen Föderation, statt. Neben John Atkin nahmen auch
Persönlichkeiten wie Jacques Diouf, Generaldirektor der
Welternährungsorganisation FAO, sowie zahlreiche
Landwirtschaftsminister teil. |
