Sowing
of kharif [=summer] food crops is progressing satisfactorily.
As
per data compiled by the Agriculture Ministry, the early trend of sowing is encouraging.
Major foodgrain crops have
been grown in more area than that at this time last year. Kharif
pulses and oilseeds have also been sown in more area. Non-food crops -- sugarcane,
jute and cotton -- however, have been grown in lesser area this kharif.
The
cropped areas this year and last year for major kharif
crops are as follows:
