Brussels, Belgium
February 12, 2008
The European Commission presented
today to the Member States proposals for the authorisation of
genetically modified soybean A2704-12 and cotton LL25 for import
and processing and food and feed use.
The Member States returned no definitive opinion, either for or
against the proposals, during a meeting of the Standing
Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health. The Commission
tabled the proposals following applications submitted by
Bayer CropScience
and favourable scientific assessments from the
European Food Safety
Authority (EFSA), which addressed all safety concerns. The
assessments concluded that there is no risk to human or animal
health or to the environment.
According to the relevant procedures the Commission must now
transmit the file to the Council for a decision. If the Council
does not reach a position within three months, the proposals
will be sent back to the Commission for final adoption.
