Historically, commodity prices
have had their ups and downs, which can make crop input
decisions tricky for growers. As a grower resource, you're in
the position to help growers sort through the product clutter
and identify products with an excellent value proposition. The
value of using treated seed as opposed to untreated seed is a
model example, as the benefits growers receive go far beyond
pest protection.
Available this fall, CruiserMaxx® Cereals seed treatment from
Syngenta Seed Care combines the power of three proven active
ingredients – one insecticide and two fungicides – to provide
protection against early-season insects and yield-robbing
diseases at the same time. Additionally, tests have proven
thiamethoxam, the insecticide active ingredient in CruiserMaxx
Cereals, enhances vigor in cereal crops under certain
conditions. Known as the Thiamethoxam Vigor™ effect, this
enables better and stronger root development and also helps the
crop emerge faster.
"Syngenta Seed Care strives to develop the highest performing
most efficient products for our growers," said Chad Shelton,
Syngenta Seed Care crop manager. "Years of research have been
committed to scientifically prove that thiamethoxam produces
healthier, more vigorous plants, even when there is little or no
insect pressure."
A healthier seedling is better able to withstand stress
throughout the growing season, including the effects of moisture
and heat stress, as well as threats from insects and diseases.
The Thiamethoxam Vigor effect not only helps plants better
handle stress, but research has shown it helps generate faster
emergence, more even plant stands, healthier root mass, thicker
stems, earlier canopies and taller and greener plants, all of
which help improve quality and yield potential.
It's no secret that insects and diseases can both cause serious
yield reductions if they are able to take hold of a young,
developing crop. By planting seed treated with CruiserMaxx
Cereals, growers benefit from both insect and disease protection
at the same time. The insecticide component protects against
damaging insects like wireworms, which have the potential to
reduce plant stands by as much as 80 percent. And, because
wireworms feed underground, foliar insecticides are not a
control option. CruiserMaxx Cereals also battles against a
variety of aphid species, which transmit barley yellow dwarf
virus. Mefenoxam and difenoconazole, the fungicide active
ingredients in CruiserMaxx Cereals, protect against 16
early-season seed-borne and soil-borne diseases, including
Pythium, Fusarium and Septoria, and offer excellent seed safety
for optimal seedling development and root growth. Even if
growers don't think diseases are a threat, it's important to
remind them of the interaction that occurs between insects and
diseases. Because insects feed on plant tissue, they can leave
wounds that weaken the plant and make it more susceptible to
disease. CruiserMaxx Cereals delivers the enhanced value of
insect and disease protection at a single use rate in one
package without the need for mixing.
"CruiserMaxx Cereals is a professional-grade product that is
specially formulated for cereal crops that growers can apply
themselves or have applied on-site by one of our distribution
partners," explained Kiran Shetty, Syngenta Seed Care technical
crop manager. "The formulation has been optimized to ensure
consistency in performance that often results in healthier
plants and a more productive crop."
Regardless of product promises, what sets products apart is what
the grower is left with at the end of the season. Research
proves CruiserMaxx Cereals delivers on its value proposition.
Even in the absence of insects, the Thiamethoxam Vigor effect
helps boost yield potential. Establishing a robust stand with
CruiserMaxx Cereals helps plants produce more bushels with
higher test weights. And for the grower, that means a better
chance for more money in the bank.
