USDA seeks comments regarding the establishment of grain sorghum and sorghum silage order

.

Washington, DC
November 21, 2007

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is seeking comments regarding the establishment of an industry-funded promotion, research, and information program for grain sorghum and sorghum silage. An order will be published in the Federal Register on Nov. 23, 2007. The proposal is authorized by and must be consistent with the Commodity Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 1996 (Commodity Promotion Act). Comments regarding the proposed order may be submitted by any interested person, group, or organization.

Lloyd C. Day, administrator of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, said “An order would provide for assessments on sales of grain sorghum and for sorghum silage. An industry board would carry out promotion, research, and information programs designed to expand markets for sorghum.”

All comments will be reviewed and considered in developing the final rule. The Department is looking for substantive comments and data that will help refine the provisions of the Order so that it will meet the needs of the sorghum industry.

Similar promotion programs currently exist for beef, lamb, pork, soybeans, cotton, dairy products, eggs, fluid milk, mushrooms, watermelons, potatoes, popcorn, and Kiwifruit under commodity specific legislation. USDA has responsibility for oversight of these programs.

Comments should be sent in duplicate to: Kenneth R. Payne, Chief; Marketing Programs Branch, Room 2628-S; Livestock and Seed Program, AMS, USDA; 1400 Independence Avenue, SW.; Washington, D.C. 20250-0251, to be received no later than Jan. 22, 2008. Copies of the notice and additional information are available at that address, telephone (202) 720-1115.

Based on proposals received, USDA would publish a proposed order in a future issue of the Federal Register. For any proposed order published, USDA would receive public input during a public comment period of at least 60 days. Subsequently, a final order would be published which would serve as the foundation for a self-help industry promotion program.
