Champs témoins et tests de Coton Bt de la ferme SOFITEX

Dans
le cadre de leur journée portes ouvertes tenue le mardi
14 novembre 2006, les chercheurs de l’INERA, de l’INSAH
et de l’ISAAA ont convié des producteurs et
vulgarisateurs agricoles du Burkina et de certains pays
Africains, à une visite commentée des champs témoins et
tests de Coton Bt de la ferme SOFITEX expérimentale de
Boni, dans la province du tuy.
Suite aux commentaires des experts nationaux en
recherche agricole, les visiteurs burkinabé et étrangers
ont traduit leur enthousiasme devant les résultats des 4
années de recherches et se sont dit confiants quant à
l’aboutissement heureux du processus de vulgarisation du
Coton Bt au Burkina et dans la sous région.

Africa's largest producer of
cotton, Burkina Faso, is, according to this story, to introduce
transgenic cotton to the market in June 2007 in a bid to
increase production and fortify a crop susceptible to insects.
The plan has sparked concern from
organisations that believe genetically modifed organisms pose a
potential danger to the environemnt and human health and will
not solve Africa's farming problems.
"There is no longer any obstacle
to introducing transgenic cotton in Burkina. It was scheduled to
be introduced in 2008 but the authorities want it to be in
2007," said Celestin Tiendrebeogo, director of the Society of
Burkina Fibers and Textiles (Société
Burkinabé des Fibres Textiles - SOFITEX).
"This new technology will reduce
the cost of production for farmers and eliminate the predators
of the cotton sector," added Agriculture Minister Salif Diallo.
Burkina launched trials of
genetically-modified Bt cotton in 2003.
Cotton production accounts for 60
percent of state revenue and supports four million people. |
