After yields
topped three tonnes per hectare in 2005, faba beans are
attracting renewed interest.
While new varieties, Farah and
Cairo are expected to deliver better disease protection from
chocolate spot, ascochyta and cercospora, the
GRDC is supporting 12
DAFWA evaluation trials
to identify new sources of disease resistance.
Meanwhile,
Pulse Australia is linking with grower groups to define
areas where new varieties are best suited.
Pulse Australia's Alan
Meldrum said the trials would target Gnowangerup, Frankland,
Moora and Irwin.
"With appropriate disease
resistance and agronomic management, Western Australia's faba
crop could build towards 50,000 hectares," he said. |
