Parties to the Biosafety Protocol can access
more examples of positive experiences with biotechnology
though CropLife
International’s “Database of the Benefits and Safety of
Biotechnology” - now linked to the Biosafety Clearing House
(BCH)*.
CropLife International’s new, practical tool
provides access to quality, peer-reviewed studies that
highlight the positive impacts of agricultural biotech
products and technologies, and can easily be searched in
terms of crops, traits, countries, regions, and/or
beneficial impact area (agronomic, environmental, safety and
health, developing countries or co-existence). There is also
a collection of "overview documents," which contains papers
that cover most types of benefits.
An abstract or summary is available for each
paper, along with summaries and "Did you know?" key facts.
The database also features a keyword search function.
"Policymakers and regulators need evidence
supporting the benefits of using crops derived from
biotechnology - an essential consideration when formulating
policies or implementing regulatory systems,” said Christian
Verschueren, Director General, CropLife International. “The
database is directly relevant for the BCH, as it provides
rapid access to scientifically-credible research to support
decisions.”
Access to the database is also available
through CropLife International's website
www.croplife.org/biotechdatabase.
* The BCH is an information exchange
mechanism established by the Biosafety Protocol to assist
Parties with implementation of the treaty’s provisions and
to facilitate sharing of information on, and experiences
with biotechnology. It aims to assist governments to make
informed decisions regarding the importation or release of
biotech products in their borders. The BCH can be accessed
at
http://bch.biodiv.org/.
