About 1800 experimental wheat
lines chosen for their suitability to Queensland's harsh wheat
growing environment should be available for evaluation and
breeding within 18 months.
Queensland Department of
Primary Industries & Fisheries wheat breeder John Sheppard
selected the lines on a recent visit to the
CIMMYT program in Mexico,
choosing them particularly for their yield potential under
drought stress and for durable disease resistance.
He said the new wheat lines
represented diverse sources of disease resistance and yield
improvement and would augment the Queensland breeding program
for many years.
"The yields of some of the
selected lines are unreal, at 8.5 and nine tonnes to the
hectare," Mr Sheppard said.
