Testing the grain quality of Australian wheat varieties
Australia
June 2, 2006

If Australia fails to improve the grain quality of wheat varieties, grower returns could plummet A$26-36 per tonne by 2009.

According to grain science researcher, Brian Osborne, growers need peace of mind that new varieties have been thoroughly tested and will gain them access to the highest paying end markets.

Dr Osborne works with BRI Australia Ltd., which researches grain quality and processing on behalf of the GRDC supported National Wheat Quality Testing Program.

BRI Australia data was a key factor in ascertaining the best varieties for the steamed bread market, which not only represents five per cent of Australia's $4.5 billion wheat exports, but looks to have a future of growth.
