Canadian Food Inspection Agency; pedigreed seed for forage, turf, groundcover, and native prairie species crop inspection procedure
Canada
November 8, 2004

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of pedigreed seed crop inspection is to provide a third party unbiased inspection and the completion of a report for the Canadian Seed Growers' Association Growers' Association (CSGA) noting the isolation, condition, and purity of the crop. It is the inspector's responsibility to describe the crop as observed at the time of inspection.

SCOPE

This Seed Program Specific Work Instruction (SWI) outlines the procedures that an official crop inspector will follow in inspecting forage crops and related species for pedigreed seed status. The crop inspection program ensures that crops grown for pedigreed status meet the requirements for varietal purity and crop standards as specified by CSGA with knowledge that production has been measured against the requirements for varietal purity and crop standards as specified by the CSGA’s Regulations and Procedures for Pedigreed Seed Crop Production (Circular 6). The procedures may also be used for the inspection of seed crops of grasses and legumes of similar species where the seed will be used to establish lawns or turf, for reclamation purposes or for the establishment of native prairie stands.

This SWI applies in all cases where CFIA crop inspection services are provided for perennial forages, turf, groundcover, native prairie species and similar species.
