Garst Seed Company announces the introduction of YieldGard® Rootworm (YG2) corn hybrids for the 2003 planting season. These new hybrids are designed to protect corn from rootworms, an insect that annually costs U.S. growers over $1 billion in lost revenue.

"Garst is excited about the recent federal registration of the YieldGard® Rootworm (YG2) trait," said Jeff Sernett, Garst corn product manager. "Our next step for 2003 is to conduct the final hybrid strip-testing phase in preparation for commercial launch."

Garst has multiple experimental hybrids that will carry the YG2 trait. This trait is key for corn farmers because it offers in plant protection against rootworms and is safer and more convenient than soil-applied insecticides.

All of Garst’s commercial hybrids are a result of extensive research, breeding and product development investments. The YieldGard® Rootworm hybrids are no exception and Garst intends to distinguish YieldGard® Rootworm in hybrid nomenclature with the trait designator YG2. This trait is the second in the YieldGard® brand family and thus carries the YG2 designation.

"We see great value in this trait’s rootworm protection as well as the safety and convenience it offers our customers," said Sernett. "Garst continues to be a leader in technology offerings as well as proprietary genetics to deliver yield plus trait tools."

"Technology stewardship is always a key component in all seed trait technologies," said Gene Kassmeyer, Garst crop product manager. "Stewardship and grain channeling will be paramount to all growers benefiting from this technology over the long term."
