Saskatchewan Wheat Pool CEO appoints new leadership

Regina, Saskatchewan
April 16, 2003

Saskatchewan Wheat Pool today announced the appointment of Fran Malecha to the position of Senior Vice President, Grain Group, effective immediately. Lyn Kristoff has been named interim Chief Financial Officer and Doug Weinbender will assume responsibility for the Agri-Products division.

"We've generated significant momentum with our successful organizational and financial restructuring and today's appointments position key executives to build on that momentum," Pool CEO Mayo Schmidt said. "These leaders made important contributions to our restructuring. Their commitment to excellence and their ability to convey that commitment to staff and customers has been, and will continue to be, key to the Pool's success going forward."

Schmidt said these appointments will also enhance the effectiveness of the senior management team by eliminating a level of management, streamlining decision-making and improving internal communication.

Malecha joined the Pool in June 2000 from General Mills Inc. and has been a driving force in the development of the Pool's grain merchandising and logistics expertise. Schmidt said Malecha's superior leadership and marketing skill are important assets as the Pool implements its post-restructuring business plan.

"Fran has performed exceptionally well through these challenging past few years," Schmidt noted. "The relationships he's developed with front-line country staff and our key suppliers and end-use customers will help the company achieve its full potential as we move forward with our revitalized business plan."

Weinbender, who has been at the Pool since 1976, is well versed in the Pool's operations, having worked variously as an elevator manager, grain trader and territory manager, as well as in a number of management roles in Head Office. His interim leadership of the Agri-products division through the financial restructuring enabled the Pool to maintain customer confidence at a critical point in the agri-products annual cycle.

Kristoff, Vice-President Finance and Corporate Controller, joined the Pool in 1996, after holding several senior positions with SaskEnergy, a provincial Crown Corporation. A chartered accountant, Kristoff was a key player in implementing the Pool's credit agreement and capital restructuring initiatives.

As a result of these appointments, Michael McCord and William Hill will be leaving the Pool.

Saskatchewan Wheat Pool is a publicly traded agribusiness co-operative headquartered in Regina, Saskatchewan. Anchored by a prairie-wide grain handling and agri-products marketing network, the Pool channels prairie production to end-use markets in North America and around the world. These operations are complemented by value-added businesses and strategic alliances, which allow the Pool to leverage its pivotal position between prairie farmers and destination customers. The Pool's Class B shares are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol SWP.B.
