Garst Seed Company and
Left & Center Field of
Dreams officials announce this year's corn maze design will
be the Farm Safety 4 Just Kids logo in honor of the
organization's 15th anniversary. "Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is
honored to have the corn maze created in our logo. It has been
through the generosity and support of sponsors like Garst Seed
Company and Left & Center Field of Dreams, that Farm Safety 4
Just Kids has been able to spend the past 15 years educating
children, youth, and farm
families about farm safety. The corn maze is the ideal way to
celebrate the advancements that have been made in the childhood
farm safety movement," said Marilyn Adams, President and Founder
of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. As the tradition holds, a portion of
the proceeds received at the maze will
be donated to the Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. Farm Safety 4 Just
Kids is a non-profit organization working to promote farm safety
for kids. Adams, Spokesperson, Founder, and President started
the organization after the death of her eleven-year-old son,
Keith, in a gravity flow wagon of shelled corn on the family's
Iowa farm. Today, the organization produces and distributes
educational materials for farm safety. A chapter network of
nearly 3,000 grassroots volunteers has also been established
throughout the United States and Canada. For more information,
contact your local chapter or call (800) 423-5437. More
information is also available at
www.fs4jk.org.
"I feel that what Farm Safety 4
Just Kids does is just tremendous. Anything they can do help
reduce accidents on the farm is great," said Keith Rahne,
Manager of the Left & Center Field of Dreams. "We're extremely
happy to be associated with such a class act operation." The
Left & Center Field of Dreams first teamed up with Garst Seed
Company to create a corn maze in 1999 to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the popular baseball movie "Field of Dreams." Now
in its four year, the corn maze's August 1st grand opening will
again feature 15 informational areas within the maze to test
visitors "Field of Dreams" and baseball knowledge. Answering all
15 questions correctly will win the quest a prize at the
souvenir shop. At various resting spots, maze goers will also
find information regarding the importance of corn to Iowa's
economy and other facts telling of the wide range of consumer
goods produced from corn. Garst is the "Official Seed Corn" for
the maze. The maze will be cut from 9 acres of Garst 8349 RR,
which was planted May 10th. The seed for the field was provided
courtesy of Tom Helle of Farmer's Shipping in Dyersville, IA.
"Farmer's Shipping in Dyersville
has been a long time supporter of Left and Center Field of
Dreams and the corn maze," notes Jeff Lacina, Public Relations
Manager for Garst. "This project, including Farmer's Shipping,
Left and Center Field of Dreams and Garst is just a great
example of how we
can work together for a fun project that benefits a greater
cause." In order to create a maze of corn, the corn must be
planted in such a way to make a "forest" for the designer and
cutters to create in. To do this, the corn was planted in rows
going both east to west and north to south. A crew will then cut
the design into the field when the plants reach eight to 12
inches high.
The magical corn maze surrounds
the Left & Center Field of Dreams, which is located just 3.3
miles northeast of Dyersville, Ia., and is open seven days a
week from 9 AM to 6 PM August 1st through the end of October.
"We're really happy with the corn maze," said Rahne. "It is
really family oriented and a great time for all. We even have
some corporate entities use the maze as a teambuilding
experience."
The corn maze is an added attraction to the popular Left &
Center Field of Dreams. Visitors to the maze continue to return
year after year and many wait in anticipation for the time when
the corn is finally ready to venture through.
In the movie "Field of Dreams",
the corn plays an integral role. It is in the corn that baseball
fan and farmer, Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, first
hears the dream-like suggestions, "If you build it...he will
come." Following his hunch, Kinsella then transforms part of his
cornfield into the serene "field of dreams", complete with
outfield "fences" of high-as-an-elephant's-eye Iowa corn. It is
from this same magical corn the "ghost players", members of the
1919 Chicago White Sox and Joe "Shoeless
Joe" Jackson appear and play ball on Kinsella's cornfield
creation. Today, on special occasions and on the last Sunday of
June through September, the Field of Dreams "Ghost Players" make
their magical return through the cornfields surrounding the
field. Many of today's ghost players did appear in the movie and
still enjoy playing ball on the "field in the corn" and meeting
and greeting fans from around the world.
While no appointments are needed
to visit the corn maze, group events can be organized to the
maze. The Left & Center Field of Dreams staff can handle special
groups, class outings, corporate events and tours with a few
days notice. To schedule a time or get more information please

& Center Field of Dreams office at (800) 443-8981 or visit their
