A system for the protection of variety rights has been established by Community
legislation. This system allows intellectual property rights, valid throughout the
Community, to be granted for plant varieties. The CPVO implements and applies this scheme.
It is a Community institution with independent legal status and has been operating
since April 1995. The CPVO publishes the Official Gazette six times a year and an annual
report.
