Post-harvest fruit evaluation in melons

.

February 2006

bin.jpg (5207 bytes)In the last five years, Harris Moran researchers have put very high emphasis on post harvest fruit evaluation.

A system has been designed that allows Harris Moran researchers to select clearly superior varieties and breeding lines.

Working closely with researchers at the University of California at Davis and Texas A&M University, this system looks closely at western shippers, honeydews, and eastern shippers for a variety of post harvest characteristics, including:

  • ethylene level
  • interior color
  • exterior color
  • sugar level
  • flesh texture
  • external fruit rot resistance

We feel confident that this technology will help us select superior products for both traditional distribution outlets and fresh cut applications.
