Interview with Manny Shemin

How do you see the organic seed sector evolving over the next five years? What will be the main difficulties, obstacles & opportunities?

The vision that I have for the next five years is that the organic seed industry will grow to become a global industry.

At this stage, the focus is still mainly on vegetables, herbs and flowers. Soon, there will be important developments in the major field crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, cotton, beans etc. As organic seed production costs drop and the demand increases, along with greater yields and higher quality, it is safe to forecast a $100 billion dollar a year level for all sales of organic products in a few years.

Growers will have to be retrained, sales and marketing activities will also have to be increased, distribution will take place on a global basis.

Seed companies have to make a decision to either enter the organic arena now or to wait by the side of the road until they are swept away by the momentum.

Entrepreneurs are likely to create the emerging enterprises of the future.
