- The organic industry is growing
rapidly;
- By law, organic growers will have
to buy organic seed starting in October 2002 in the US and in
January 2004 in Europe.
- Over the last 4 years, our company
has developed a sophisticated infrastructure for organic
seed production.
At this stage, the demand for
certified organic seeds comes mainly from the hobby market,
seed packets and small to medium size organic growers. Our
large assortment has been developed to service mainly this
particular market. The other market segment of professional
seeds companies is still dormant, but it is not difficult to
anticipate the future demand. It will develop very slowly
until 2004 and increase very rapidly after that. As long
as the seed companies and their professional customers can use
conventional seed for their organic production, they will not
buy organic seed. This will change when the organic laws are
implemented in 2002 and 2004.
Our infrastructure in research,
production and processing enables us to double or triple our
capacity every year. Most of our growers have large fields,
and more land will be certified in the next 1 to 3 years. From
our experimental stations and research organization, we will
obtain more and more selected open pollinated and hybrid F-1
varieties. We will become increasingly more efficient and more
productive, which in turn will enable us to reduce prices and
gradually close the price gap between organic and conventional seed.
In January 2003, Genesis Seeds plans
to issue its first catalogue for the professional seed
companies. This catalogue will include our own proprietary
selection of organic seed varieties.
