International Emissions Trading Association video launched at COP27 highlights how Nuseed Carinata reduces, removes and restores carbon

Australia
November 18, 2022

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is vital to fighting climate change and the race is on to reach the Paris Agreement’s target of zero emissions by 2050. In the lead up to COP27, the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and partners produced a news-style program, ‘Net Zero: The Integrity Pathway’, showcasing best practices and innovative solutions in carbon reduction and offsetting.

Glenn Johnston, Head of Sustainability for Nuseed Carinata, interviewed for the segment explained: “We only have three places in the globe to put carbon; water, air and soil. And it’s critical that we start putting more in the soil because we know the other two have deteriorating effects to the environment. We need to put more in our soil, and that’s what is critical to move forward.”

Cover crops improve soil health, sequester carbon as they grow, and protect against erosion and carbon loss in the months between main crop rotations when land is typically exposed.

Nuseed Carinata is a non-food harvested cover crop, contract grown sustainably for low-carbon renewable oil feedstock on existing farmland. The interview highlights the unique positive carbon mitigation impact this non-food oilseed crop can have to reduce emissions when used to replace fossil fuels. It huge, largely untapped cover crop potential to remove carbon from the air and restore it to the soil is where it’s critical to regeneration.

Dirk Forrister, President and CEO of IETA said: “IETA is excited to once again join forces with ITN Business to produce a series of informative programs demonstrating how IETA’s membership is rising to the net zero emissions challenge. IETA will continue to play its part to work with countries and companies to achieve their net zero aspirations.”

Supported by an IETA led communications digital campaign targeting various carbon market participants, the program launched on 2 November 2022 and was shown at COP27 in Egypt.
