Texas AgriLife Research rice field day set July 14 in Beaumont - ‘Designing Texas Rice for the Future’ is the theme of daylong event

“Designing Texas Rice for the Future” is the theme of the 74th annual field day on July 14 at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Beaumont, 1509 Aggie Drive, Beaumont.

The rice field day will be held July 14 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Beaumont. It will mark 74 years of the annual event. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo)

The event is open to the public and free of charge. The field day will start at 8 a.m. with rice field tours followed by an indoor program at 10:45 a.m. A barbecue lunch and afternoon field tour will round out the program.

Texas Department of Agriculture licensed private, commercial and non-commercial pesticide applicators participating in the field day may obtain continuing education credits for recertification.

Field tours

The morning field tour will showcase recent developments in inbred and hybrid rice breeding, plant physiology, nutrient, disease and insect management.

The current U.S. Department of Energy bioenergy crop research will be the showcased afternoon tour.

Rice field day indoor program

Ted Wilson, Ph.D., center director and holder of the Jack B. Wendt Endowed Chair in Rice Breeding, Beaumont, will open the program. Wilson will give a brief overview of the center’s research followed by three keynote speakers.

The topics and speakers are:

  • Market-Driven Texas Rice Production — Marcela Garcia, U.S. Rice Producers Association president and CEO, Houston.
  • Breeding for the Total Rice Phenotype of Texas — Stanley Omar Samonte, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research hybrid rice breeder, Beaumont.
  • Remote Sensing Application for Precise Nitrogen Fertilizer Management in Rice — Brenda Tubana, Ph.D., Louisiana State University AgCenter – School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences professor, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
