Ireland
15 June 2022

Seedtech hosted their trade walks in their trial grounds this week, bringing news from their extensive research trials programme in Faithlegg, Co. Waterford.

There was an opportunity to see what's happening in Seedtech's breeding programme with new varieties and crops that will help SHAPE THE FUTURE OF SEED for Irish tillage farmers.

Seedtech has a wide range of cereal varieties with new genetic traits and a focus on disease and pest tolerance combined with yield and quality traits.

As well as the usual variety trials in wheat, barley, oats, beans and oilseed rape, visitors had an opportunity to look at new crop options with a bright future like distilling wheat, winter malting barley and rye.

Sowing for Success

3 key varietal attributes to look for when choosing which varieties and crops to sow this autumn

"Seedtech has identified three crucial varietal attributes to look for when choosing which varieties and crops to sow this autumn.

These, along with detailed agronomic characteristics, will help you choose the most suitable varieties for your farm. Seedtech has created three icons to denote the varieties that have achieved this important ranking to support decision-making by farmers.

Farmers can use the rating system of YIELD SECURE, N+ ADVANTAGE, and SUSTAINABLE CROPS along with Seedtech's Autumn Drilling Guide to help them make informed decisions this autumn," said Tim O'Donovan, Technical Director, Seedtech.

Nigel Whyte, General Manager, Seedtech, said, "A vital pillar of sustainability is the profitability of the entire system. Seedtech is actively involved in developing new markets for the crops we grow, such as distilling wheat, hybrid rye and specialist ingredients for bread-making".

Seedtech's Autumn Drilling Guide can guide drilling crops near the optimum drilling dates, help use machinery efficiently and manage weather variations as we look to get the right crops into the ground.

Tim O'Donovan, Seedtech, explained that "by starting to drill autumn crops in mid-August with winter oilseed rape and finishing in mid-November with winter oats, farmers have a 14-week drilling window for autumn sowing. The Seedtech variety portfolio offers proven choices to help reduce risk within this 14-week drilling window.
