Nuseed's Omega-3 Canola completes food and feed safety study

Australia
February 27, 2022

In a recent study published in the Frontiers in Nutrition journal, Nuseed Omega-3 Canola oil was once again endorsed by experts for product safety.

In this case, the peer-reviewed, high-impact journal focuses on nutrition, sustainable diets, and human health.

The study concludes Nuseed Omega-3 Canola oil is safe to consume in human foods, nutraceuticals, and animal feeds.

Our bioengineered canola is the first land-based production system for omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), with a high level of DHA. Marine sources for these nutrients are under pressure due to overfishing and the increasing demand, but Nuseed’s plant technology has the potential to double the world’s supply of DHA on less than 5% of current canola acres. Just one to two hectares of Nuseed Omega-3 Canola has the potential to provide DHA equivalent 10,000kg fish.

Nuseed Omega-3 Canola seeds are crushed after harvest and processed into two oil products: Aquaterra for inclusion in fish feed formulations and Nutriterra for human nutrition. These products address increasing market demand, as well as the complex interplay of agriculture, aquaculture and human nutrition.

The characterization and safety evaluation of food and feed produced from Nuseed Omega-3 Canola are supported by this study’s detailed nutritional analysis of seed, meal, and oil. Aside from the intended changes of the fatty acid profile, the data did not show any other biologically meaningful differences when compared to conventional canola.

Given that most human populations lack sufficient daily intakes of omega-3 LC-PUFA, a dietary exposure was also included in the study. Several studies indicate that higher omega-3 levels are associated with reduced risk of several chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease. Nutriterra human clinical trials also verified product safety and indicated efficacy, meaning supplement users can expect this omega-3 oil to perform as expected.

Further evidence of nutritional value and safety of Nuseed’s proprietary canola oil has supported in fish feeding studies. Reliable sources of omega-3 oil are required by the growing aquaculture industry for the health and welfare of farmed fish.

With yet another safety assessment concluded for this biotechnology based crop, Nuseed Omega-3 Canola is a readily scalable and a sustainable land-based production system for omega-3 fatty acids.
