Western Grains Research Foundation commits C$6 million to 43 new research projects

Canada
January 11, 2022

Through a continuing co-funding partnership with the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF), the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, and other producer commodity groups, WGRF is pleased to announce up to $6 Million of new funding for 43 crop-related research projects.

“Our ability to work with other research funders and grower groups is one of WGRF’s greatest strengths,” says Dr. Keith Degenhardt, WGRF Chair. “Co-funding partnerships help maximize the investment we as producers are making in crop research.  These 43 new promising research projects will undoubtedly help lead to improved crop production for western Canadian producers.”

WGRF is co-funding 24 projects with ADF as well as an additional 18 projects exclusively with other commodity groups.  The approved projects include research into:

  • Nitrogen use efficiency,
  • understanding the effects of crop rotation,
  • developing tools and management of insect pests and weeds,
  • fusarium head blight management,
  • soil management,
  • managing fungal diseases,
  • drought tolerance,
  • phenotyping, as well as genomics and breeding for disease resistance,
  • increased yield and trait improvements in multiple crops.

“WGRF continues to invest in both single-crop and multi-crop research through partnerships like the one with ADF,” says Garth Patterson, WGRF Executive Director. “We have also continued our efforts to accelerate crop research, through our Capacity Initiatives ensuring the equipment, buildings and people are in place across Western Canada to increase research capacity.”

A full listing of projects will be posted on the WGRF website once research contracts are in place. More than 560 past and present WGRF funded research projects are currently listed on the WGRF website wgrf.ca.
