Four new Barenbrug varieties launched for 2022
With over 35 Barenbrug bred varieties now on the Recommended Lists, Barenbrug are one of the UK’s most prolific grass-breeders and producers.
Ballyvoy and Dundrod are both late perennial ryegrasses from the Barenbrug-AFBI British breeding partnership, in Northern Ireland, and are two of almost 50 varieties to have come from this partnership over the last 30th years.
Barimax, a tetraploid Italian ryegrass, late heading and high quality, and Baronaise Timothy, are both Barenbrug bred varieties from the Royal Barenbrug's global breeding programme. Baronaise is very high quality in both digestibility and ME yield, and is the first new Timothy to be listed in Scotland since 2003.
Four new Barenbrug varieties launched for 2022
Barimax
BARIMAX is a Barenbrug bred tetraploid Italian ryegrass variety, and is the first Barenbrug bred Italian ryegrass to be added to the Scottish recommended list. Barimax is one of the latest Italian ryegrass varieties available with excellent quality, without compromising on yield. It has excellent crown rust resistance and first year ground covers.

Attributes: High ME yield, Excellent winter hardiness (7.2), Excellent spring growth
Yield: Year 1 average: 18.41t DM/ha, Year 2 average: 14.32t DM/ha
Baronaise
BARONAISE is a Timothy bred by Barenbrug, and is one of the truly international varieties being officially listed in England and Wales, Scotland, Holland, Denmark & France.
Baronaise performs very well under both cutting and grazing management schemes making it a very flexible option and ideal for fields that receive both treatments. The key feature of this variety is its quality as the highest quality Timothy available on the RGCL offering the highest ME yield of 123,760 MJ/ha.

Ballyvoy
BALLYVOY is a late diploid perennial ryegrass which was bred in Northern Ireland for the Barenbrug-AFBI breeding programme and first officially listed in 2020. The Ballyvoy grass variety performs very well under both cutting and grazing management schemes where its key feature is its high spring growth, comparable with many much earlier heading varieties. BALLYVOY has the highest silage ME yield of all the perennial ryegrass diploids on the English & Welsh Recommended List at 134,400MJ/ha.

Dundrod
DUNDROD is a late diploid perennial ryegrass which was bred in Northern Ireland for the Barenbrug-AFBI breeding programme and first officially listed in 2019.
Dundrod performs very well under both cutting and grazing management schemes although it best suited to silage production where its key feature is its excellent first cut yield, comparable with many much earlier heading varieties.
