AHDB’s Recommended List update for spring barley growers in England

United Kingdom
December 1, 2021

November 29th saw the launch of the AHDB’s new Recommended List for 2022/23, and there are some exciting new additions for Spring barley.

Four new varieties have been added to the Recommended List, three with potential malting quality (Jensen, SY BRONTE and Spinner) and one for the feed market (Malvern).

Jensen hits the top spot of treated yields, with SY BRONTE and Spinner coming in just behind.  All three new additions in the malting sector are under test for brewing.

SY BRONTE is the newest addition from the Syngenta breeding programme, joining the likes of LAUREATE, SY TUNGSTEN, SY SPLENDOR, and old favourites such as PROPINO, OPTIC and NFC TIPPLE.

Here is a quick overview of our newest variety SY BRONTE:

Strong yields across all regions, particularly in England where the major brewing markets are located

Stiff straw with high resistance to lodging and brackling, giving it security on high potential sites and in difficult weather conditions

Robust disease profile and high untreated yields, which could bring flexibility for fungicide timings

Good grain quality and malting potential, with a good specific weight and low screenings, initial results show it has high brewing quality

SY BRONTE will be at our Innovation Centre sites across the UK in 2022, so there is a great opportunity to visit us in the field over the summer and hear more about this exciting new variety.

There are new Recommendations in the winter barley market too, with our new Hybrid Barley SY CANYON being added to the AHDB RL 2022/23.  For more information click here.
