BASF's vegetable seeds business has collaborated with Nature Source Improved Plants (NSIP) as an external collaborator since 2008, but as of July 1, 2021 we have entered into a more intensive, comprehensive partnership. The collaboration focuses on four key segments within our Cucumber, Pepper, and Tomato breeding programs to develop and execute breeding work-flows, combining the NSIP genomic selection toolbox and BASF germplasm and breeding expertise
NSIP's experience in genomic selection across a variety of crops makes them an excellent candidate to complement our own internal expertise. By working as an additional partner in the specified breeding segments, NSIP offers knowledge that will help us introduce desired traits more quickly.
Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, NSIP will work closely with selected breeding teams, applying their extensive bank of algorithms to improve data driven decision making throughout the breeding and selection process. "By applying these algorithms with additional phenotyping, our breeding teams will improve the output of our predictive breeding efforts," says Johan Warringa, Head of R&D EMEA, Vegetable Seeds, BASF. Predictive breeding brings together tools such as phenotyping, genomic selection, and statistics to help breeders make data driven predictions of which lines will perform best in a given situation. Dr. Steve Tanksley, Chief Technology Officer of NSIP added, "NSIP is excited to be providing both its expertise and advanced analytical tools in this collaboration to develop higher yielding, and higher quality vegetables for the benefit of farmers and consumers worldwide."
"Of course, we are also working on genomic selection in-house, but NSIP brings important additional expertise and their unique Operation Research based approach to breeding and statistical algorithms. It's a key component of the strategy for BASF's vegetable seeds R&D division -- carefully selecting the best collaborations in order to stay on the cutting edge of research. "We cannot do it alone," says Andreas Sewing, Vice President R&D, Vegetable Seeds, BASF. "In order to tap into the best innovations, we must look outwards and bring expertise in where it can strengthen our own efforts. This is part of our R&D strategy, to strike the balance between internal experts in a very nuanced industry, with external partners, who can help us make big strides in specific sectors." Collaborations are an important part of business for all of BASF and since some of the company's other seed divisions have also shown interest in NSIP, this is an exciting opportunity to see what can be done with a stronger, more intensive and purposeful collaboration. "Especially since 2020 has taught us a lot about how distance is a much smaller factor in partnerships like this than we once believed," says van den Berg. "Distance between partners was often seen as a barrier, but after being forced to find work-arounds in 2020, we've come to realize that distance is just one factor, and often a surmountable one, especially in the case of using computational tools. It opens the door to even more collaboration possibilities for both the vegetable seeds business and the rest of BASF."
These new ways of working are good news since collaborations are a great way to gain a new perspective, speed up a project, and come up with exciting new ideas. BASF’s vegetable seeds business werkt al sinds 2008 samen met Nature Source Improved Plants (NSIP) als externe partner, maar vanaf 1 juli 2021 zijn we een intensiever, uitgebreider partnerschap aangegaan. De samenwerking richt zich op vier belangrijke segmenten binnen onze veredelingsprogramma's voor komkommer, paprika en tomaat om veredelingsworkflows te ontwikkelen en uit te voeren, waarbij de genomic selection toolbox van NSIP en het germplasm en de veredelingsexpertise van BASF worden gecombineerd.
De ervaring van NSIP op het gebied van genomic selection voor diverse gewassen maakt hen tot een uitstekende kandidaat om onze eigen interne expertise aan te vullen. Door als partner in de specifieke veredelingssegmenten te werken, biedt NSIP kennis die ons zal helpen gewenste eigenschappen sneller te introduceren.
In het kader van de meerjarige overeenkomst zal NSIP nauw samenwerken met geselecteerde veredelingsteams, waarbij NSIP zijn uitgebreide algoritmenbestand zal toepassen om de datagestuurde besluitvorming tijdens het volledige veredelings- en selectieproces te verbeteren. “Door deze algoritmen met aanvullende fenotypering toe te passen, kunnen onze veredelingsteams de output van onze voorspellende veredelingsinspanningen verbeteren”, vertelt Johan Warringa, Head of R&D EMEA, Vegetable Seeds, BASF. Voorspellende veredeling brengt tools zoals fenotypering, genomic selection en statistiek samen om veredelaars te helpen datagestuurde voorspellingen te doen over welke veredelingslijnen in een bepaalde situatie het beste zullen presteren. Dr. Steve Tanksley, Chief Technology Officer van NSIP, voegt hieraan toe: “NSIP is verheugd om zowel zijn expertise als zijn geavanceerde analysetools ter beschikking te stellen in deze samenwerking voor de ontwikkeling van groenten met een hogere opbrengst en een hogere kwaliteit ten behoeve van telers en consumenten wereldwijd.”
“Uiteraard werken we intern ook aan genomic selection, maar NSIP biedt belangrijke aanvullende expertise en hun unieke op operationeel onderzoek gebaseerde benadering van veredeling en statistische algoritmen. Door samen te werken met NSIP zetten we grote stappen vooruit in gebieden waar zij hun bestaande expertise kunnen inzetten, waardoor wij ons beter kunnen concentreren op andere belangrijke gebieden met ons eigen onderzoek”, zegt Jan van den Berg, Scouting & Collaboration Management, Bioscience Research, BASF.
Het is een essentieel onderdeel van de strategie van de R&D-afdeling van BASF’s vegetable seeds business – het zorgvuldig selecteren van de beste samenwerkingen om voorop te blijven lopen op het gebied van onderzoek. “We kunnen het niet alleen”, aldus Andreas Sewing, Vice President R&D, Vegetable Seeds, BASF. “Om de beste innovaties aan te boren, moeten we de blik naar buiten richten en expertise binnenhalen waar die onze eigen inspanningen kan versterken. Dit maakt deel uit van onze R&D-strategie om het evenwicht te vinden tussen interne deskundigen in een zeer genuanceerde industrie, met externe partners die ons kunnen helpen grote stappen te zetten in specifieke sectoren.” Dr. Suresh Prabhakaran, Chief Operating Officer van NSIP: “Ons doel is een betrouwbare strategische partner te zijn en de grenzen van genomica en productietechnologieën te verleggen. Samenwerkingen zijn belangrijk voor BASF en aangezien ook andere zaaddivisies van het bedrijf belangstelling hebben getoond voor NSIP, is dit een mooie uitdaging om te zien wat we kunnen bereiken met een sterkere, intensievere en doelgerichte samenwerking. “Vooral omdat 2020 ons heeft geleerd dat afstand een veel kleinere factor is in dergelijke partnerschappen dan we dachten”, zegt Van den Berg. “Afstand tussen partners werd vaak als een belemmering gezien, maar nadat we in 2020 gedwongen waren workarounds te vinden, zijn we tot het inzicht gekomen dat afstand slechts één factor is, en vaak een overkomelijke, vooral bij het gebruik van computertools. Dit opent deuren naar nog meer samenwerkingsmogelijkheden voor zowel de vegetable seeds business als de rest van BASF.”
Deze nieuwe werkmethoden zijn goed nieuws, aangezien samenwerking een geweldige manier is om een nieuw perspectief te krijgen, een project te versnellen en verrassende nieuwe ideeën te bedenken. Dit alles is essentieel om onze partners sneller betere oplossingen te kunnen bieden, met betere gezondheids- en duurzaamheidseigenschappen die ook nog eens lekker smaken!
