March 6, 2025
The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), a CGIAR Research Center, officially welcomed Dr Himanshu Pathak as Director General during an Inauguration Ceremony on 6 March 2025. The hybrid event brought together key stakeholders in agricultural research and development, with in-person gatherings in India and virtual participation across African and other locations. In his address, Dr Pathak acknowledged both the challenges and opportunities ahead as ICRISAT strengthens its mission to build agricultural resilience in dryland regions, navigating the impacts of climate change, population growth, and evolving dynamics in development funding.
Dr Pathak’s tenure follows a period of transition led by Dr Stanford Blade, who served as Director General–Interim. The Institute expresses its deep appreciation to Dr Blade for his leadership during this period, as well as the remarkable contributions of outgoing Director General Dr Jacqueline Hughes. Dr Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director of CGIAR, welcomed Dr Pathak’s appointment and emphasized his expertise in agricultural research and innovation.
ICRISAT Governing Board Chair, Professor Prabhu Pingali, reinforced this endorsement, highlighting the Board’s commitment to supporting Dr Pathak in advancing the institute’s strategic vision and expanding its global impact.
Incoming ICRISAT Governing Board Chair-Elect, Professor Cathy Reade, also expressed her support for Dr Pathak and affirmed her confidence in ICRISAT's continued global leadership in dryland agricultural research.
