Syngenta For the Love of Veg capsicum quiz

They are (hopefully) the fruit and vegetables you eat regualarly but how much do you know about them? Here's some facts to whet your appetite.

1. Cucumbers can actually help with bad breath!  A slice pressed to the roof of your mouth for 30 seconds with your tongue allows phytochemicals to kill the problematic bacteria.

2. The world’s largest tomato plant is housed at Walt Disney World (Florida) and covers an area larger than an Olympic sized swimming pool (56 sq. meters).

3. Watermelon has more Lycopene than a tomato. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and also responsible for the red coloring within veggies.

4. There are many more watermelon seeds eaten raw in Asia Pacific than actually used for the purpose of growing a crop!

5. Brussels Sprouts are actually named after the city Brussels, due to their popularity in the 16th century. Settlers then introduced them to North America in the 18th century and later became a commercial crop.

6. Tomatoes are by far the most popular fruiting veg in the world – not bad for a product containing 95% water!

7. A ‘hybrid’ plant is produced when a plant breeder intentionally cross-pollinates two different varieties of a plant with the aim to produce an offspring – or ‘hybrid’ as it’s known. Cross pollination is also a very natural process in the wild.

8. Believe it or not... All corn cobs have an even number of rows!

9. Zucchini fruit grows at a rapid rate. In warm conditions, fruit can grow 50mm per day. Growers sometimes harvest in the morning and again in the afternoon.

10. Capsicums do not contain capsaicin, which gives other peppers such as chili peppers their hot, spicy flavor.

There you have it, 10 tasty facts about horticulture. Why not share this with your friends and see how they compare?
