A firled crop evaluation conducted by
Johnny's Selected Seeds in Albion, Maine during November revealed
Sakata broccoli and Asian vegetable varieties that perform well in the
Northeastern United States.
According to Vegetable Trial Manager
Terry Allan, it was a long, dry summer in Albion and these conditions
allowed Johnny's to evaluate the performance of several crops under
heat stress. Each variety entered into the trial was given an overall
rating from 1-5 points, 5 being excellent, with general comments.
Sakata broccoli varieties Decathlon
and Triathlon received an overall rating of 4.0. Evaluators
commented that the broccoli was attractive, well projected, and had
excellent uniformity. Decathjlon yields a vigorous, upright plant
under both heat and cold conditions, making it a very suitable
selection in the Northeast. Sakata's newest broccoli, Nomad,
received an overall rating of 4.5. Evaluators commented that Nomad,
which has performed well in many trials, was large and attractive with
fancy beads. Sakata continues to develop broccoli varieties that
exceed growers' expectations in a variety of regions. For more

Sakata also offers a wide variety of
Asian vegetables, particularly Chinese and Japanese Greens, that
perform well in the North East. Sakata 's Ryokusai No. 2, a
samll Tah Tsai, or Chinese flat cabbage, received a perfect score.
This is a heavy yielding hybrid Chinese Green with a larger frame. It
performs more prostrate (rosette) under cool temperatures. The variety
is both cold resistant and heat tolerant, which makes it very suitable
for the Northeast. Viewers commented that it is darker green and more
uniform than regular Tatsoi and that it holds very well. Tokyo Beau,
a hybrid Mizuna (Kyona) Japanese Green is extra cold tolerant and
grows very large. It received an overall rating of 4.0, and viewers
noticed its pretty ornamental leaves. Chinese and Japanese Greens are
a primary focus of Sakata's Asian Vegetable program. For information
