Newark, Delaware
October 8, 2001
Strategic Diagnostics Inc.,
(Nasdaq: SDIX) - a leading provider of antibody products and
analytical test kits for the food safety and water quality
markets, announced today the immediate availability of a
protein-based strip test method for the detection of Monsanto's
NK603 Roundup Ready(R) Corn.
The method utilizes SDI's existing TraitCheck(TM) RUR Test Strip
and has been validated by SDI to detect one kernel of NK603
mixed with 200 negative kernels. The availability of the method
provides farmers, grain handlers and food processors a tool for
consigning grain to meet the expectations of their customers and
ensure appropriate distribution of NK603. NK603 is approved for
use in food and feed in the U.S. and Japan, but not in the
European Union. 2001 is the first year of commercial production.
The seed and grain industry has established a channeling
program, ensuring corn is delivered to domestic markets or for
feed use on farms. The TraitCheck(TM) RUR method provides the
means for ensuring proper channeling stewardship of NK603 corn.
TraitCheck(TM) RUR is the only commercially available test for
Roundup Ready(R) Corn and can be used to rapidly and reliably
detect NK603 at this time.
Richard C. Birkmeyer, President and CEO of SDI commented, "We
believe the availability of this
product at this time in the 2001 harvest is critical to our
customers. With this product, our customers have the full
complement of testing tools they need going into this year's
harvest. We are proud to be working with industry leaders, trade
groups and government agencies to ensure that appropriate test
methods are available for important Ag Biotech products like
Roundup Ready(R) Corn. With the release of this test, SDI
strengthens its market-leading position as the provider of
testing solutions for the Ag Biotech market."
