March 23, 1998University researcher Fredrick Bliss Ph.D., widely acclaimed for his
breeding efforts and the development of new breeding techniques, has accepted a senior
position with Seminis Vegetable Seeds.
As the senior director of worldwide breeding, Dr. Bliss will oversee seven
species-specific associate directors, who supervise 77 breeders worldwide, according to
Allen Stevens, director of worldwide research. "Freds primary focus will be to
increase the level of innovation in the breeding programs of our brands," said
Stevens. "His talent and diverse experience will help build strong bridges among our
biotech researchers, plant pathologists and vegetable breeders. Were extremely
pleased to have him on board."
Before joining Seminis, Dr. Bliss held the Will W. Lester Endowed Chair at the
Department of Pomology at the University of California-Davis. For 22 years prior, he
served on the faculty of the Dept. of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
where he received his doctorate degree.
He has received numerous awards and professional citations and has been invited to
serve on a broad range of private and government advisory groups. He is a mentor, a
frequent lecturer and a prolific author in his field. Currently, he is the president-elect
of the American Society for Horticultural Science.
Dr. Bliss will be based at Seminis Vegetable Seeds worldwide research
headquarters in Woodland, California.
