Des Moines, Iowa
August 16, 1999Widespread drought and
adverse weather conditions are causing a serious shortage of feedstuffs for livestock
producers in many areas. That's why Pioneer Hi-Bred
International, Inc. has designed a new electronic bulletin board to help bring buyers
and sellers of hay and forages together across North America.
The Emergency Forage Connection bulletin board, located on the Internet at http://www.pioneer.com/flash, is now posted live,
offering both livestock and grain producers a
free and easy way to communicate with one another during this critical time.
"We have water deficits throughout the East, and a lot of the corn isn't going to
make a grain crop,'' says Robin Newell, Pioneer area sales manager for the company's
Eastern Sales Area. "However, there is still an opportunity for growers to salvage
their corn by turning it into silage. And that will help dairy producers, who desperately
need the silage for their livestock. By putting grain farmers in contact with dairymen,
we're hoping to create a win- win situation for everyone involved.''
Pioneer sent a special mailing announcing the new site to over 20,000 producers throughout
the East, the region where the drought is most severe. However, the site is available to
anyone in the
country who has Internet access.
Growers visiting the website can easily retrieve information about for-sale items or
forages in need. They can submit their own free advertisements by completing a short form.
A self-chosen password is required to complete, edit or delete all ads. The site also
offers helpful crop management information by Pioneer forage and dairy specialists, as
well as links to other pertinent forage sites.
"We're very aware of the needs of our customers,'' says Newell. "And during
stressful times, we
want to provide services that help producers maximize their crops -- even if not for the
original
intended purposes. We hope this bulletin board system will help people make the best
choices for their farming operations -- choices that ultimately will benefit their bottom
line.''
