Oakland, California
May 19, 1999Pangea Systems, Inc., and Dow AgroSciences LLC today announced that Dow
AgroSciences LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, has licensed Pangea's
bioinformatics software for use by multiple sites across the United States in the life
science company's research and development efforts.
The license agreement covers Pangea's GeneWorld®, GeneMill®, GeneThesaurus(TM), and the
Pathway Tools.
GeneWorld, GeneMill, GeneThesaurus, and the Pathway computational tools are part of a
comprehensive software solution offered by Pangea. GeneWorld is an automated,
high-throughout
analysis software that lets researchers access, annotate and analyze high volumes of
public and
proprietary data. GeneMill is project management software for DNA sequencing operations.
GeneThesaurus is a data subscription that integrates disparate data from multiple public
databases of gene and protein sequences, and protein structure information. Pathway Tools
allow scientists to elucidate and view sets of biochemical pathways, and the compounds
that participate in those pathways.
"Analyzing and managing nucleic acid data along with metabolic pathway information is
an
enormous chore,'' said Sam Reddy, global leader for Genomics at Dow AgroSciences. "It
is
further complicated by our need to establish virtual links with multiple research sites
across the
country and to work off public and proprietary databases.
"Pangea's software allows us to analyze and annotate data more rapidly to determine
how the new sequences will work in 'real-world' applications. In addition, the software's
Web-based interface will make it easier for our researchers to operate the respective
software modules and share information internally and with our research partners.''
According to John Couch, chief executive officer of Pangea Systems, the Dow AgroSciences
purchase demonstrates the flexibility of the bioinformatics software's ability to handle
any kind of life science data.
"The adoption of Pangea's software solutions by one of the leading companies in plant
genomics
and agricultural biotechnology illustrates that our products serve the entire life science
industry,'' said Couch. "Agricultural biotechnology is growing fast with an enormous
future, and we are looking forward to more opportunities to partner with companies like
Dow AgroSciences.''
Dow AgroSciences LLC, based in Indianapolis, is a global leader in providing pest
